What’s in a UI? Relating Reformatting Screens to Better Productivity

There are a lot of terminal emulation products on the market and all of them basically fulfill the same need, and for many companies they don’t think about terminal emulation as tool that can also provide an additional boost to their productivity. It’s a tool to manage, access and maintain connections and bring back-office automation to the mobile worker, but where else can it streamline my business operations?

Sometimes it is just the little things that increase productivity. Traditionally, on a ruggedized mobile device you have your black screen with green text communicating actions or information to the end-user. These screens can be very difficult to read and often times have lots of information that isn’t necessarily relevant to all end-users. By adding a simple WYSIWYG screen editor called a Screen Reformatter to your emulation tool, administrators are able to capture emulation screens and then reformat the screens to optimize the user’s experience. You can personalize the end-users experience based on the ruggedized hand-held device and work environment.

With a Screen Reformatter an administrator can change the background color on the device to something different, like the color white for example, and change the font color to, say, black making it easier for the end-user to see what they are doing. Administrators can even remove unnecessary fields and/or screens that users have to cycle through to get to the information they need. Likewise, with functions, administrators can remove certain functions that show-up on the device that isn’t relevant for a particular group of workers or individuals. Maybe they just need to go to a certain bin and pick a quantity but on the device they don’t need it to say “pick quantity” they just care about the actual quantity. By removing unnecessary information it frees up the limited screen space enabling administrators to increase the text size of more relevant information making it easier for end-users to do their job.

Through the use of a Screen Reformatter you can provide an improved user experience, therefore making it easier for someone to do their job that much quicker. Through increased productivity you’ll see gains that help you meet your businesses goals.

The Future of Wavelink Products Plus Hands On Training?

Many of you have heard the news about Interchange 2013, but I wanted to take a moment and give you a bit more information on it, and why we feel it’s important. For years, our sister company LANDesk has hosted the event as an opportunity for end users to receive hands on training and education of the products they were using. For partners, it’s a chance to reach out to existing – and perhaps more importantly – potential customers. For both, it’s an opportunity to learn new and emerging industry trends and techniques, and product road maps.

Well, starting in January, we’ll be providing the same for Wavelink customers and partners. I can’t stress how exciting of an opportunity this is. It’s essentially a one-stop-shop for all things Wavelink and our industry, with the added benefit of learning new topics from LANDesk. When you put that together, you have one of the most comprehensive events for complete “enterprise mobility.”

Translating Wavelink’s Reporting Features For BI / Analytics

As everyone is aware by now, Big Data and BI / Analytics continues to be a significant part of Gartner’s top 10 priorities for CIOs for 2012 (see, for example: http://www.gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=1826214).  This makes it one of the top 10 priorities for supply chain managers as well.   What many supply chain organizations and their supporting partners may not be aware of, is that they have some unique data that can be added to the BI / Analytics toolkit via their already deployed Wavelink device management and device client applications.   All that is needed is a little effort to map the Wavelink reported statistics onto the enterprise’s other BI / Analytic framework.

Wavelink Avalanche provides a wealth of device management reporting to supply chain management operations.  Not only does it supply pre-configured, off-the-shelf reports, but the system is flexible enough to support creation of custom reports by the end-user or by a certified Wavelink partner.   Data provided in these reports would fall under the category of “Dashboarding”, “Advanced Analytics with Drill-down”, and/or, “Scorecarding and KPIs”, using the current vernacular of BI / Analytics (see, “Driving SMB Efficiency With Business Intelligence,” for example).   However, unlike those more general reports, Wavelink provided data adds an additional dimension to the reporting by focusing specifically on the mobile device assets used in real-time supply chain operations.   For customers using Wavelink’s Emulation Clients, (Telnet, or WIB), there are even more real-time statistics available for reporting, and would make an excellent input to “Exception Handling and Alerting”, functions of BI / Analytics applications.

So, how do supply chain managers take advantage of these features to support their CIO’s BI / Analytics functions?

Looking to Talk Mobility, but not Sales Pitches?

As I mentioned in “Cutting to the Chase: Let’s Talk MDM“, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find thoughtful, insightful discussions on mobile device management, enterprise mobility, etc. With a few exceptions, such as The Enterprise Mobility Forum, and a few LinkedIn groups, it’s hard to find discussions that aren’t bogged down by this individual pitching that solution, and so on. 

We want to change that. I invite you to check out our LinkedIn Group where we want to create a community of enterprise mobility professionals connecting, and talking all things “mobile ecosystem”. We filter who can and cannot join, ensuring that anyone who is simply there to promote their solution will either be rejected, or removed. The hope is that you can talk shop, ask questions, and/or learn new technologies without spending an afternoon weeding through spam.

An Ocean Away – Does Mobility Look Different Down Under?

So, how does the mobile ecosystem look from down under? Well, the truth is, mobility is mobility, whatever corner of the globe you’re looking at it from. My customers and partners in Australia and New Zealand look at mobile device management needs the same way our friends back in the states do, and I think it’s safe to say that customers are much more informed about the space than they ever have been. As such, they are looking for solutions that will transform roles and have tremendous operational impact.

For instance here are just 3 examples of roles that would value taking the technical data collected and convert this into management information

  • COO’s – provide utilization and operational availability of the investment in mission critical devices
  • CFO’s – provide pro-active spend mapping for consumable and device refreshes including tangible ROI analyses for mobility projects
  • CTO’s – provide pro-active estate management with trending of issues and replacement requirements including utilizing the information to run technical trials and let the system tell them which device operates best in their environment

The Present and Future of “Value” in Value Added Resellers

Supply chain customers and end-users have always relied on their I/T supplier companies to assist them by bringing the “Value” in Value Added Reseller.   Over the years, VARs have led the way by providing services and support that their supply chain customers rely on to run their own businesses.   However, as technology continues to evolve, VARs are working hard to keep up with creating new services and support that will help their customers adapt.   Far beyond the standard RF site survey, leading VARs today have to be focused on a myriad of  technologies and techniques in order to remain “Valuable”.   Here are just a few of the areas where VARs are advancing the state of the art.

What it Means to Provide for the Mobile Ecosystem

Every now and then, we have the opportunity to tell new customers and/or Partners about what it means to provide solutions for the entire mobile ecosystem, and it struck me that it might make a great topic for a blog post.

When you look at our solutions, the best way to visualize the “how do they all work together?” question is to envision an enterprise within the four walls. Let’s say that the enterprise is divided into the following “sections”, all of which come with their own needs and requirements.

In every Warehouse, applications are being run for a variety of tasks. This is where we begin our circle of mobile ecosystem solutions, via Studio and TE which allow organizations to deliver the aforementioned applications to mobile assets, such as handheld computers. From there, it’s possible that some of those applications are web-based, and therefore require an Industrial Browser or Velocity to render and properly run them. For further productivity, many companies are now looking to voice-enable these very same applications, which as you’ve seen in our Goya Foods video, our Speakeasy product  does quite well.
