Wavelink Gets the Call at Cisco Architectural Trends 2011

On a personal note, it was a bit of a shock to go from a sunny Caribbean vacation to 16 degrees and 10 inches of snow in Minnesota. But that being said, I was excited nonetheless, to learn that we had been invited to participate in the 2011 Cisco Architectural Trends Event in Minneapolis right before Thanksgiving.

A lot of large organizations have been asking their Cisco Sales teams to learn more about how they can manage their Cisco 7921 and 7925 wireless phones with Avalanche. We conducted a training WebEx with a team of Cisco System Engineers last month, and the next thing we knew, we were packing our bags and heading to Minnesota to meet their customers.

It was a one day event with a full schedule of informative breakout sessions that were well attended by over 150 local and regional Cisco customers. We made some great new contacts and are looking forward to the opportunity to solve their Wireless Management challenges.

Stay tuned for more information on Avalanche and Cisco phones in the coming weeks, and in the meantime, here are a few photos I snapped while at the event.

Happy Holidays everyone!

Hand-helds to Improve College Courses?

Today’s entry comes courtesy of one of our Sales Rep’s, and it definitely classifies itself in the “Oh, how the times have changed” bin. The article covers how universities are now leveraging the power and flexibility of wireless hand-held devices to improve collegiate courses. The idea is that by utilizing these wireless devices, a new door is opened for classroom interaction, participation and attendance:

“Though the technology is relatively new, preliminary studies at Harvard and Ohio State, among other institutions, suggest that engaging students in class through a device as familiar to them as a cellphone — there are even applications that convert iPads and BlackBerrys into class-ready clickers — increases their understanding of material that may otherwise be conveyed in traditional lectures.”

It really is an innovative way to use some of the benefits of wireless devices. Remembering back to your college days, would you have ever pictured such a thing? I certainly didn’t!

A Look at Managing Mobility and More…

We’re halfway through the week, and my goodness have the last few months been flying by! I was checking out some posts on Twitter and came across a good read from Network World about successful wireless initiatives. One of the aspects I found particularly interesting was the part about BlackBerries, and I’d be curious to hear if any of you have the same or different opinion.

One of the other items I was drawn to was the bit on security. It talks about security needs and what to do about lost and stolen devices. The reason I was so interested is because we recently joined in on a conversation on “Device Wiping” on the Enterprise Mobility Forum (which we’ve mention before), so I found the timing to be spot on. They also have a good discussion on why you need a mobile help desk.

Finally, in lieu of Veterans Day, Wavelink would like to extend a big thanks to all the Veterans out there!

RFID in Healthcare

Many of you are probably already aware of Zebra Tech’s blog, but for those of you who aren’t, you ought to stop by from time to time. Today, I saw a tweet from their feed and thought I’d share.

As we’ve mentioned before, the Healthcare industry is poised to see tremendous growth over the next several years. In this post by the folks at Zebra, they touch upon some of the reasons why. I’m not going to give you all the reasons they discuss because you should check it out for yourself, but here is a snippet from the post:

“Nursing homes and hospitals are starting to use RFID-enabled applications such as wander-prevention systems, as the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease increases. And the pharmaceutical industry, which faces the same supply chain management challenges as any warehouse or distribution center, is relying on RFID solutions for accurate asset tracking.”

They also have a good post on “5 Challenges for Implementing RFID in Hospitals” that is worth a read. As of this post the link was incorrect, so just in case, you can view it here.

Tell us what you think. Do you see the same trend(s)? Are you in the Healthcare industry and have any light you can shed on the discussion?

Web Based Remote Control for Cars and Road Show Update

Greetings! A couple of items for today’s post. The first is an article that I came across at the end of last week which caught my attention. We’re big on the benefits of remotely diagnosing and remedying problems, hence our remote control product. So naturally, when I saw that Chevrolet will soon allow owners/drivers to remotely set/check on current settings and statuses of their Chevy Volt automobiles, I was intrigued. Give it a read and tell us what else is on the horizon for remote control type applications, and where you’d like to see them evolve?

New PCI Requirements Announced

Quick post today. Things are abuzz after we moved offices. Now that I’ve finally unpacked, I can share a good read with you that I came across this morning on PCI and the newest compliance standards, which are set to take effect tomorrow.

It’s a pretty comprehensive rundown and touches on some good information. Have a look and tell us what you think. Were you aware that these changes were set to take effect?

And since I mentioned we moved offices, I figured I’d send along a couple of photos of the new place!

Welcome to the new office!
